    »SMILING MIND: An excellent Australian app teaching mindfulness.

    »HEADSPACE and DIGIPILL are also great, but incur additional costs.

    »RECHARGE: Sleep well, be well. 6 week program to get your sleep habits back on track from the amazing Young and Well CRC

    »SEND THIS INSTEAD: Pressured to send explicit texts/s3xts?  Send these visual messages instead!

    »WOOP: A scientific strategy by Professor Gabriele Oettingen to fulfil wishes and change habits. Anyone can WOOP (Wish, Outcome, Obstacle, Plan)

  • DESKTOP PLUG-INS FOR MONITORING USE

    »ANTI-SOCIAL and FREEDOM: To block access to your choice of sites on your computer

    »RESCUE TIME: For monitoring where your time online actually goes.

    »MY MENTAL SPACE: Stop wasting time online and start managing it

    »CHORE WARS  is a great way to gamify your households chores and HABIT RPG is another app which allows you to set up rewards for completing tasks.

    »LEARNMETER: Monitor the activities each device and the human operating it is doing.  Rates the activities based on their learning potential. Australian owned and operated!

    »OURPACT:  a tool for parents to harness the power of their child’s mobile device to their advantage. Limits app access and time online.  I really like this one because it talks about the power of agreements and communication.

  • APPS FOR TRACKING/RESTRICTING ONLINE USE

    There are hundreds of these apps and bits of software that you can use to help shape your use of technology.  I get asked quite regular to trial them and write about/sell them to you.  They can be useful to increase awareness of the habits.

     

    »PAUSE: Pause the digital, start the real. It gamifies your time offline against your mates.

    »MOMENT:  Put down your phone and get back to life (IOS only at the moment).  Also MOMENT FAMILY, for tracking multiple devices.

    »DIGITAL DETACH: for Android temporarily turns your smartphone into a dumb phone that limits everything except calls and texts for a period of time that you choose.

    »BREAKFREE: Tracks your time spent using your smartphone, sends reminders and limits (Android only)

    »MENTHAL and DIGITAL DETOX: For a sustainable digital lifestyle.

    »CHECKYAPP: How many times a day do you check your phone?

    »QUALITY TIME: Discover your smartphone habits. Manage your Digital Diet (Android only)

    »DUMBPHONE:  Makes your smartphone work like its 2002.

    »Also, REALISM and NoPhone: don’t let the laugh get lost on you!

    »GENERATION LIKE (2014) –  documentary by the very excellent Douglas Rushkoff  (who made The Merchant’s of Cool in 2001) on the way social media shapes teenager’s identity and the marketing of products.

    »Tiffany Shlain’s CONNECTED and free, emmy nominated THE FUTURE STARTS HERE series

    »WEB JUNKIE (2014) – documentary that looks inside the Daxing Video Game Addiction Reprogramming clinic in China.

  • PEOPLE WHOSE WORK I LOVE

    »Sir Ken Robinson, education and innovation theory dude.

    »Dr Jane McGonigal (game designer) and her twin sister Dr Kelly McGonigal (psychologist who specialises in mindfulness and self-control).

    »Dr Dan Siegel, author of a bunch of emotion control and brain development books on parenting.

    »Dean Groom, he writes a blog called playable which will flip your thinking on the EdTech movement.

    »David Ryan Polger, the @TechEthicist and his Mental Food Plate as well as the DIGCITSUMMIT

    »Diana Graber and her very excellent Digital Citizenship program CYBERWISE (based near LA)

    »Devorah Heitner from RAISING DIGITAL NATIVES (based in Chicago).
