The smartphone function you're not using enough

You don’t have to be cramped in cattle class to use this.

I fly because it releases my mind from the tyranny of petty things ~ Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Popping your phone onto flight mode is one of the simplest ways to reduce digital distractions while still being able to access functions on your phone that might help productivity (calculator, pic editing tools, notes etc).

In just a couple of taps, you can silence all notifications, alerts, emails and apps which vie for your attention via intermittent reinforcement (meaning these digital ‘rewards’ come to you in occasional and relatively unpredictable ways).

It’s the randomness of this reinforcement and the ‘look at me, there’s something happening’ reminders your smartphone sends you that creates the habits and behaviours which compel us to keep checking our phones. And sometimes even think our phone is ringing when it isn’t!

Your alarm clock will still work in flight mode. I’m yet to find an olde skool alarm clock which has the convenience of most smartphone alarms in which you can label and tailor your alarms to your schedule, rather than having to spend time each day resetting the timer!

Using flight mode at night ensures you wont be disturbed by texts, calls and notifications from people different time zones (or drunk friends!). It allows you to then have ‘waking hours’ notifications coming through that are relevant and important to you.

My most important tip, with using flight mode is a metaphorical one.

When you use it, imagine that you’re actually switching your mind into a higher plane (pun totally intended) that you’re choosing consciously to glide and to ‘take flight’. Anchor into whatever visual imagery that resonates with you of going higher, having different perspectives and incredible freedoms and use that to propel you through your activities with ease and grace.

By signalling to your mind, that you are choosing to be in a zone which is intended to support your mental elevation and boost your creativity and clarity you’re getting both space from the distractions and the quietness needed to create!

You haven't seen a tree until you've seen its shadow from the sky. ~Amelia Earhart

Added bonuses: When in flight mode your battery will both drain more slowly and charge faster (as there is less background activity being used by apps and functions).

Fly high.
